DRAINING: Here's what's going on underneath Charleston's streets

There’s a lot going on under the streets of Charleston — about $50 million to $60 million worth of drainage projects happening at any given time.
One of the largest projects to come online in recent history is the US-17/Spring-Fishburne Project deep tunnel drainage system which is now operational and set to provide significant flooding relief to “Crosstown” or the Highway 17 interchange in downtown Charleston.


A Japanese commercial vehicle manufacturer has revealed big plans for the Upstate. Isuzu North America Corp., a supplier of commercial vehicles, has selected Greenville County to establish the company’s new production base in the United States, according to a news release. Smithey Ironware Co. is expanding its operations to Charleston County with a $3.1 million investment, creating 16 new jobs. Applebee’s signed its multi-year partnership with the National Football League to be its “Official Grill + Bar” in April and now the casual dining chain is poised for Thursday's season kick off with deals and activations. The Starbucks and Yum Brands veteran will replace Frances Allen at the quick-service restaurant chain Checkers Drive-In Restaurants Inc., parent company of quick-service chains Checkers & Rally’s, has named Chris Tebben chief executive officer, effective Sept. 4. Air Canada has selected Boeing’s 787 Dreamliner as part of an ongoing effort to modernize and grow its fleet with an order for 18 new jets and an option to purchase 12 more. The carrier ordered 787-10 widebody Dreamliners, according to a news release. The value of the order was not disclosed. The flag carrier of the country, Air Canada will deploy the new fuel-efficient airplanes as part of its broader strategy to reduce carbon emissions while expanding its global route network, the news release said.
